Portsmouth forward Ini Umotong has said Super Falcons were not shaken despite going down 2-0 before the break in their opening 2015 Women’s
World Cup in Canada against Sweden on Monday.
The African champions eventually held the European giants to a 3-3 draw in a thrilling encounter at the Winnipeg Stadium.
Umotong, an unused substitute in the encounter, said the entire bench was in high spirits even though the Falcons were trailing 2-0.
“We all were still very hopeful; the two goals were from our own doing but we were playing well. We also know what our forwards can do, so we knew goals were coming from us. We had to keep positive for the girls on the field, so we were always in high spirits, even when we were two goals down,” the Pompey Ladies striker told The PUNCH.
The 21-year-old added that the Falcons will be banking on team unity and the willpower to succeed in their next game against Australia on Friday.
She added, “I think we have a team spirit that’s like no other. We believe in each other and we know our talent. We have a drive and determination that can see us through any game even when the odds may not be in our favour. We all are really excited ahead of our next game.”
Coach Edwin Okon may stick to his preferred duo of Asisat Oshoala and Desire Oparanozie against the Aussies but Umotong is hopeful of getting her chance to feature in her first World Cup game.
“I’m just hoping to make it onto the field. But whatever the coach decides, I’ll be happy with it; he knows what’s best for the team.”
