Army Chief says military enjoys democracy than military rule

Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Tukur Buratai, yesterday declared that the Nigerian military was far better off under democratic dispensation than under military regimes. Buratai made the assertion in Bauchi while addressing senior
military officers drawn from the Armoured Corps and 33 Artillery Brigade, Bauchi.

According to him, “the military is far better off under democratic dispensation than what it used to be under the military rules.

“We have, therefore, remained non-political, as imbibed by the Army, since 1999, and we must remain focused, loyal, professional and dedicated to our responsibilities.

“We must equally work with other sister agencies such as the Police, Department of State Security (DSS) and other paramilitary organisations and must observe their rules”.

The Army Chief also urged the officers, to cultivate the principle of ‘esprit-de-corps’ among themselves and to create peaceful co-existence between the officers and rank and file, which was vital during operations.

He noted that the military authorities had commenced the renovation of barracks and would construct more, to curb shortage of accommodation currently being faced by the military.
