IGP warns cops against extrajudicial killings

The Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, has warned that any officer or rank and file found to have shot innocent civilians will henceforth be tried within 48 hours in the law court. He gave this warning on Thursday in the Ogun State
Command’s headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, on the sideline of his visit to the state to see the level of preparedness of his men for the burial of the matriarch of the Awolowo family, Hannah Idowu Dideolu.

Arase, who also advised his men in convoys to stop the barbaric acts of whipping civilians with horsewhips and sticks, warned Commissioners of Police to stop sending officers with psychological problems on assignment.

He said, “Nigerians are not animals; don’t beat civilians with horse whips, especially the officers on a governor’s convoy should be stopped by Commissioners of Police.

“Any police officer that shoots a civilian must be arraigned in court within 48 hours, because you’re not allowed to shoot a civilian.”

Arase also said the Spy Police attached to banks should stop using police uniform from January 1, 2016 or risk being arrested and detained by the police.

The IGP promoted eight sentry guards of the command to their next ranks for impressive performance during his inspection of guards of honour.

The officers are Haruna Ijiji, Tochukwu Igwe, Friday Momodu, Faruna Danjuma, Felix Adejoh, Mathew Adelu, Usip Uwemedimo and Emmanuel Unazi.

Announcing the welfare package for the Police Force, he said the police high command had concluded plan to construct a 25,000 post-retirement housing estate for ranks and files across the country.

He however directed the state Commissioner of Police, Abdulmajid Ali, to look for a suitable land with title documents for the estate in Ogun State.

He said 36, 000 officers had benefitted from promotional courses while others with additional qualifications would also be considered.

Earlier in his welcome address, the commissioner requested the police authorities to create six additional area commands in the state.

He added that the command needed additional manpower to be able to match the increasing security challenges in the state.

Arase also announced personal scholarship for 12 primary school pupils of Police Children’s School who welcomed him to the command.
